Muscle Relaxant Injections with Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®, VISTABEL®, AZZALURE®, DYSPORT®)

In our clinic, we daily address our patients’ growing need for facial aesthetic treatments that will give them a beautiful smile and radiant glow.

However, beyond changes to teeth and gums, the aesthetic needs of many patients also extend to the soft tissues of the face.

The skin’s structure changes over time, gradually losing its elasticity, smooth texture and youthful appearance. Dryness increases and the skin’s ability to regenerate decreases. The causes can be external or internal. Reduction of fat cells in the skin, deactivation of sebaceous and sweat glands, and decreased water content are some of the internal factors. Dietary habits, smoking, alcohol, stress and lack of exercise are among the most common external factors.

Ageing is a completely natural process, but it inevitably leaves its “marks”—the well‑known wrinkles. We classify them as dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles appear with every contraction of the facial muscles, for example when raising the eyebrows or frowning, and disappear when the muscles relax. Over time, however, they create permanent or static wrinkles.

The simplest, safest and most cost‑effective method today for preventing the formation of static wrinkles is the use of muscle relaxants, and it is suitable for ages 25 to 65.

Muscle relaxant injections of botulinum toxin (BOTOX®, VISTABEL®, AZZALURE®, DYSPORT®) have been used since 1980 for treatments such as strabismus and blepharospasm. Over time, as the scientific community discovered more applications for the drug, the first reports of its use for aesthetic treatments began to emerge.

In 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved botulinum toxin products for the prevention of expression lines. It is therefore a pharmaceutical substance that has been used in millions of patients worldwide for many years and is completely safe when administered by a properly trained physician.

In Europe and the United States, the aesthetic use of botulinum toxin and dermal fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid) has already been integrated into the daily practice of many dental clinics. Daily work in the oral cavity is closely linked to excellent knowledge of facial anatomy and exceptional proficiency in injections. It is no coincidence that many international seminars on aesthetic applications of BOTOX and dermal fillers are conducted by dentists.

Treatment with botulinum toxin is performed in the dental chair, is quick, and patients can return to their activities immediately. The smallest and thinnest available needles are used for a pain‑free experience. The complete disappearance of dynamic wrinkles and skin smoothing occurs within 7 to 14 days.

The most common applications of botulinum toxin are for relaxing the muscles that form wrinkles between the eyebrows, on the forehead and around the eyes. We can also slightly lift the outer part of the eyebrow.

The duration of results is 3‑4 months for first‑time treatments and 6‑8 months after the first year.

The most common possible side effects are minor bruising and slight swelling at the injection sites, and headache.

Less frequently, mild drooping of the eyelid and/or eyebrow may occur, but this is temporary and can be treated with special eye drops.

It is very important to have a discussion beforehand to clarify your aesthetic expectations, explain the procedure in detail along with possible side effects, and review your general medical history to rule out any contraindications for these substances.

Over time, however, they create permanent or static wrinkles.

Once static wrinkles have formed, treatment options are conservative or surgical. Before patients resort to major plastic surgery, they have the option to achieve similar aesthetic results without the discomfort, high cost and permanence of a “plastic” face.

The best conservative method for treating static wrinkles today is the injectable placement of dermal fillers.

Injectable dermal fillers have been used internationally for decades. Many types have been employed, but by far the most prevalent is hyaluronic acid. It is a natural component of skin tissue that holds water molecules, thereby maintaining the skin’s volume and firmness. Over time, however, its levels decrease, leading to creases and grooves.

To restore the lost hyaluronic acid, modern bio‑synthesis methods have produced non‑animal origin products that are completely safe and approved by international regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In Europe and the United States, the aesthetic application of dermal fillers has already been integrated into the daily practice of many dental clinics. Daily work in the oral cavity is closely linked to excellent knowledge of facial anatomy and exceptional proficiency in injections.

Treatment with hyaluronic acid is performed in the dental chair, is quick, and patients can return to their activities immediately. The smallest and thinnest available needles are used for a pain‑free experience, with the option of local anaesthesia if needed. Results are visible immediately, with the final appearance achieved after 3‑7 days.

Lip Volume Enhancement Before After

The most common possible side effects are minor bruising, redness and slight swelling at the injection sites. Mild pain, itching and colour changes are also normal and last only a few days. In the case of lip volume enhancement, swelling may last up to 10 days.

The most common uses are for correcting and “filling” wrinkles, such as:

  • Nasolabial folds.
  • Forehead and glabellar lines.
  • Perioral area, where a slight lift of the mouth corners can also be achieved.

One of the most popular applications of hyaluronic acid is increasing the volume of the lips and enhancing their contours.
The improved aesthetic results last 6‑9 months and in many cases up to a year.

It is very important to have a discussion beforehand to clarify your aesthetic expectations, explain the procedure in detail along with possible side effects, and review your general medical history to rule out any contraindications for these substances.
